Basic Information

The Henry Clay Archery Team is a co-ed varsity sport activity open to anyone in the school. You must have the appropriate GPA and conduct as in any other school sport or activity. You must have a current sports physical form on file by the first practice to participate.

12-24 archers make up a team; we can have multiple teams compete in NASP tournaments. The top 12 scores are used to determine the team score. The team must include at least four members of the opposite sex.

Each archer shoots 15 arrows from 10 meters and 15 arrows from 15 meters and the combined score make up the archer’s individual score. There are two archers at each target; they shoot five arrows at a time with three rounds from each distance for a total of 30 arrows. A perfect score is 300.

Tournaments

The team participates in National Archery in the School Program (NASP) tournaments as well as Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) tournaments from December – May. The time slot we shoot in is called a “flight”, each flight last about one hour; you need to arrive 30 minutes before your flight. Time commitment would be approximately one and a half hours for a tournament plus travel time.

NASP regular season tournaments are on the weekends in Lexington and surrounding counties beginning in December - March. Post season consists of the NASP State tournament in Louisville in March, and the National tournament also in Louisville in May. The state and national teams are made up of the top 24 male/females from the team (based on scores and attendance at practice and tournaments).

  • KHSAA Regional 8 tournament – Date and location TBA

  • KHSAA State Tournament is in Lexington, KY in April.

    • The KHSAA teams are NOT co-ed

    • Top 12 boys and top 12 girls make up each KHSAA team

    • The top 2 teams from the region advance to the KHSAA state tournament

    • The top three individual male and top three individual females not on an advancing team will advance to the state tournament as an individual

    • Regional tournament is held sometime between mid-March – mid April.

Practice

The team will have a total of four weekday practices, Tuesday - Friday. You are required to be at a minimum of two practices a week. A practice schedule will be set before the beginning of the season to assure everyone has equal practice time.

Morning practices are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 a.m.

Afternoon practices are Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Equipment

Most team members own their own bow and arrows, but the school does have bows and arrows that may be used at practice and tournaments.

NASP ® Original Genesis compound bow is the only approved bow.

NASP® Easton Full Length Aluminum 1820 Arrows version two is the only approved arrow for NASP archery.
